Area Features
On your quest through the Himalayan village, youâll meet Jackie, the reticulated python, as she coils her long body. Watch as flying fruit bats spread their wings, and see sloth bears napping on a hammock. Trek past the Asian elephants, including Hank, one of the largest Asian elephant in North America. Continue along the shaded path, where you will spot red pandas sleeping high up in the trees and see markhors leaping from rock to rock. Then, as you reach the end of the path, come face-to-face with a majestic Amur tiger.
Asian Elephants
Elephants are the largest living land mammals. Despite their size, elephants are excellent swimmers and very buoyant. While swimming, an elephant will use its trunk as a snorkel. Stop by our indoor and outdoor viewing areas to learn about our Asian elephant herd, including how much an elephant drinks in a day, how much Frankie, our youngest elephant, now weighs, and more.
Amur Tigers
The tiger is the largest living big cat and the only big cat with stripes! The stripes on a tiger are unique, and no two tigers share the same pattern. Did you know that feeding each Amur tiger at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium costs $7,115 a year? Our Amur tigers love cold weather and have access to their outside yard year-round.
Red Pandas
Red pandas climb down from trees head first because they have a large modified wrist bone that gives them a pseudo thumb, allowing them to grip tree trunks and tree branches and hold on to bamboo stalks. Our Animal Care team sometimes uses the bamboo that grows around the Zoo to help feed the red pandas, who can eat over 30 stalks of bamboo a day!
